Flow Cytometry as a Diagnostic Aid for Haematology Analysers: A Practical Approach in the Evaluation of Abnormal WBC Differential
Speaker

Dr Olga Pozdnyakova, MD, PhD
Associate Pathologist, Haematopathology Division,
Associate Medical Director, Haematology Laboratory, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA
Multiparameter flow cytometry has become an integral tool in the work-up of abnormal WBC findings, allowing for rapid and accurate identification of abnormal cell populations, cell lineage assignment and assessment of clonality. This presentation will discuss a series of cases that demonstrate the utility of flow cytometry in the diagnostic work-up of haematologic disorders presenting with abnormal WBC differential and incorporation of relevant criteria from the revised WHO Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues.
Lecture Objectives:
• Recognise common abnormal WBC morphology findings on peripheral blood smears
• Interpret flow cytometry reporting in the context of abnormal WBC differentials
• Review appropriate reflex testing based on flow cytometry results
• Identify improved analytical quality using a partnered approach
