Lecture Abstract
Blood product safety has always been a challenge in the Philippines, even before the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The subsequent rapid spread of the pandemic placed a massive burden on the healthcare system, causing TTI testing to be even more difficult to perform safely and consistently in an already resource-limited country. Errors in testing can lead to blood product contamination, with significant health impacts for the recipients. It is thus vital for blood banks to minimise the possibility of such errors through the development and implementation of quality assurance processes. This presentation discusses the current landscape in blood safety in the Philippines post-COVID-19 pandemic.
