Lecture Abstract
From being a ghastly, killer disease in the pre-antiretroviral era, HIV has become a chronic, manageable disorder with excellent life expectancy. HIV disease, though an infectious disease, is also an immunological disorder.
Antiretroviral treatment (ART) makes a person living with HIV (PLHIV) virally suppressed within a couple of months, and then it can remain suppressed for several years. HIV viral load monitoring at regular intervals is required. The only marker that can gauge the immune status of the person is the CD4 count, which provides information on the overall immune function of any PLHIV. The use of laboratory tests is also crucial as part of monitoring and managing complications.
It is important for clinicians to understand its natural course, co-morbidities and co-infections, their diagnosis, clinical and laboratory monitoring, counselling, managing complications and challenges through screening, treatment, optimising care and prevention to provide comprehensive and holistic care cost-effectively and with the quickest possible turnaround time.
