Lecture Abstract

“Patient Blood Management is a holistic approach that puts the patient before the product” Prof James Isbister, Australia

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is endorsed by the World Health Organisation and internationally recognised as an essential standard of care for medical and surgical patients who are at risk of blood loss or likely to require transfusion. PBM is a proactive, patient-centred, and multidisciplinary approach to manage anaemia, minimise iatrogenic blood loss, optimising adequate haemostasis and harness physiologic tolerance to anaemia. This talk will outline the key concepts and principal strategies of PBM, and elaborate on practical implementation of PBM bundles using illustrative case studies. At the end of the talk, the audience should have a better understanding of the small but sustainable measures to implement theory into practice.
